Southend manager Paul Sturrock has a few "niggles and knocks'' to contend with for his team's Carling Cup test against Bristol City.

Ryan Hall - suspended for Saturday's league opener against Stockport - is back in contention but a virus means he is likely to start on the bench.

Summer signings Bilel Mohsni and Adam Bouzid are not expected to feature again with the Shrimpers still waiting for their international clearance.

United chief Sturrock is keen to earn a result against the Robins but has said he will give his fringe players a run out.

He told the club's official website: "We want to be as competitive as possible and hope we can get a result to keep ourselves good financially. The League Cup can be a money spinner.

"I'm going to give several of my other players an opportunity tomorrow because I really have got to have a look at people and get people up to match fitness.''

Damion Stewart and Sam Vokes are out for Bristol City.

Stewart will serve a one-match suspension after the defender was sent off in the opening-day defeat to Millwall while on-loan striker Vokes suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions just 13 minutes after coming off the bench to make his City debut.

Louis Carey (heel) and Christian Ribeiro (back) could ease the Robins` injury woes as they have resumed training.

However, fellow defenders Lewin Nyatanga and James Wilson, midfielder Kalifa Cisse (thigh) and strikers Danny Haynes (groin and thigh) and Nicky Maynard (knee) remain out.

David James` understudy Dean Gerken could be handed a run-out against the League Two club.

"I am still undecided but it might be a chance to give him a game,'' said manager Steve Coppell. "I can`t chop and change much because of the circumstances as it is a case of having 17 or 18 fit players at the moment.'
