Spain full-back Joan Capdevila is hoping the world champions can defy history and see off Argentina in Buenos Aires tomorrow night.

Although the Spanish are the undisputed number one side in world football at the moment following their triumph in South Africa, Capdevila believes they have some way to go before they can be compared to the Argentinians, who have won the World Cup twice and the Copa America 14 times.

The Villarreal full-back said: "This is a world class match-up and we hope we can put on a good show. Playing Argentina gives us added motivation.

"It will be a nice match. Both teams will want to win.

"If you look at history, Argentina are better than Spain but we are enjoying a good run of results and we look forward to continuing that for a long time.''

Spain opened their qualifying campaign for Euro 2012 with a 4-0 win over Liechtenstein on Friday but Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos is expecting a more difficult test tomorrow.

Ramos said: "This is a very important match despite it being just a friendly.

"We know Argentina very well. They have great players in their squad.''

One of those great players is Lionel Messi, who is accustomed to the quality in the Spain squad as he plays alongside many of the players for Barcelona.

He said: "''Argentina wants to win every game no matter where it is.

"We must take the ball off the Spaniards' feet. It will be a very nice match and the stadium will be packed.''

Argentina playmaker Andres D'Alessandro is back in the squad after a five-year absence and is relishing the chance to prove himself once more.

"I have missed this,'' he admitted.

"I am really looking forward to being back and want to profit from this chance. I want to enjoy being here, playing the world champions at home.''

The former River Plate and Real Zaragoza playmaker added: "The Spanish players have been together a long time and they are in great form.

"They have some great players and play nice football.''

The hosts will be led by interim boss Sergio Batista, who led Argentina to a 1-0 win against the Republic of Ireland in his first game in temporary charge.
