Carlo Ancelotti hopes that Ramires will play an important part in his plan for Chelsea to dominate the English game for years to come.Watch Chelsea vs. West Bromwich Albion Live Stream Soccer 14/8 Barclays Premier League

The Blues could have their first big-money transfer in place by the time they begin their Barclays Premier League title defence against West Brom after Ancelotti revealed that a deal for the Brazil midfielder was close to completion.
Chelsea have been in negotiations with Portuguese side Benfica for more than two weeks over the transfer of the 23-year-old for a fee believed to be in the region of £17million.

Club representatives finally secured a work permit for the Brazil man despite the fact that he has not played the requisite 75% of matches for his country.Watch Chelsea vs. West Bromwich Albion Live Stream Soccer 14/8 Barclays Premier League

Ramires underwent a medical at Chelsea earlier this week and Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti now hopes the midfielder will put the finishing touches to his move soon.

"Ramires is doing medical tests again and we hope that he will sign a contract,'' said Ancelotti.

"I hope he will sign soon. He is a fantastic player. He will be the future of the Brazil national team and I hope he will be the future of Chelsea.''

Petr Cech and Alex have both overcome calf injuries in time to be fit for the game.

Full-back Jose Bosingwa is out with a knee injury while the Blues will give a late fitness test to Frank Lampard, who picked up an ankle knock while on England duty in midweek.

Didier Drogba (groin), will also be fit to take on the Baggies after he had to settle for a place on the substitutes' bench in last week's Community Shield.

Meanwhile, Roberto Di Matteo has admitted he could not have been handed a more daunting introduction to Barclays Premier League management as he prepares to face the champions at Stamford Bridge.

As if that was not bad enough for Di Matteo, Albion's next three away games are at Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Despite that tough start, Di Matteo, twice an FA Cup winner with Chelsea, is upbeat in his ambition for Albion to get rid of their reputation as a yo-yo club after being promoted or relegated six times in the last nine seasons.

Although only in his third year as a manager, Di Matteo feels that Albion have the ability to avoid relegation and eventually establish themselves in the Premier League.

Di Matteo said: "I want to stay positive and believe we can stay up and remain up in the future. That is my personal aim, the players' aim and the club's aim.

"I am very pleased with the group of players I have. They have been fantastic to me. Last season they gave me everything with effort and commitment.

"But I do believe that we need to add a bit more competition, quality and experience to our team because we cannot dip into the loan market.''

Midfielder Graham Dorrans is winning his fight to be fit.

Dorrans has been under treatment this week for a groin strain that forced him to withdraw from the Scotland squad for their friendly against Sweden.

But he has been able to return to training and Di Matteo is optimistic that he will be available.

Di Matteo, who is set to hand debuts to left-back Nicky Shorey and central defender Pablo Ibanez, has a decision to make over who will start in goal and who will lead the attack.

England international Scott Carson, who will again skipper team this season, faces a challenge from Welsh international Boaz Myhill following his arrival from Hull.

Carson is expected to get the nod to start with Ishmael Miller poised to lead the attack as a lone striker ahead of Roman Bednar.

Kevin Doyle is a major doubt for Wolves' clash with Stoke at Molineux.

The striker is struggling with bleeding in his calf, an injury which ruled him out of the Republic of Ireland's friendly against Argentina on Wednesday.Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Stoke City Live Stream Soccer August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is on alert to partner Steven Fletcher in attack. Fletcher will make his debut following his summer move from Burnley while left-back Jelle Van Damme will also make his bow after his arrival from Anderlecht.

Despite Wolves' impressive finish last season, and McCarthy's £18million outlay on new players this summer, Wolves are still tipped by many as relegation fodder this term.
McCarthy admits he will be happy wherever his side finishes - so long it is the right side of the relegation line.

He added: "Could we get into the top 10? We would have to have one hell of a season and if we ended up with that we would all be cock-a-hoop.Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Stoke City Live Stream Soccer August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

"If we got 15th we would be as well because the league is going to be just as tough and competitive. So I want better than 17th, I want better than 15th and we will be trying to get it.

"But come on, if we ended up 15th, 16th or 17th and stayed in the league, people would take it as everyone says about the second season being tougher than the first.''

Stoke manager Tony Pulis will make a late decision on whether to pitch new striker Kenwyne Jones straight into the starting line-up.

Jones joined Stoke on Wednesday from Sunderland in a club record £8million deal, however, Pulis has suggested the Trinidad & Tobago star is not as fit as the rest of his squad.

Although Pulis has options in attack, it is in midfield where the Potters are light at present, with Salif Diao opting not to sign a new deal, Liam Lawrence out with a groin strain and Glenn Whelan struggling with a calf injury. Defender Abdoulaye Faye is also a major concern with a hamstring injury collected in a recent pre-season friendly.

Pulis has warned his players against believing they have cracked it after two years in the top flight.

Pulis fears a nonchalant attitude could prove City's undoing ahead of their third season of Barclays Premier League football.

So far Pulis and the Potters have defied expectations by finishing 12th at the end of their debut campaign in 2008-09, and improving to 11th last season.

Pulis is convinced if Stoke can again stay up this season, a fourth campaign in 2011-12 will see the club start to make significant strides.

"It's just a dream for me to be manager of this club. I've said it all along and I mean it - every morning I wake up I'm a privileged person,'' said Pulis.

"I'm like that and I want the players to feel the same. It's vital we retain the level of enthusiasm, commitment and togetherness we have had over the years.

"As soon as we start to get blase then things will fall apart, so we have to stay solid, focused and not give a damn about what anybody else outside this city says or does.

"We stick together as a group, as a team, and if we can be as unified as we've been, then we'll continue to push forward.

"If we stay in the Premier League again that will be three years, and I really think you will see a massive improvement in the club.

"There are things we are putting in place that will help make this club a better club in the future.

"So give us this season, and by hook or by crook we stay in the league, then I think you'll see a really solid club next season.''

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce will make a late decision on Darren Bent's fitness ahead of the Barclays Premier League opener against Birmingham at the Stadium of Light.

The striker had to withdraw from the England squad in midweek following a back spasm and Bruce rates him as 50/50.Watch Sunderland vs. Birmingham Live Stream Soccer August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

If Bent is not fit then new signing Danny Welbeck and youngster Martyn Waghorn will hope to start up front while Simon Mignolet is certain to be given the nod in goal with Craig Gordon sidelined by a broken arm.

Titus Bramble, Nedum Onouha, Marcos Angeleri, Paulo da Silva and Cristian Riveros will all hope to make their debuts but Andy Reid (Achilles) is out and George McCartney and Anton Ferdinand have not been given squad numbers.
Bruce is confident his side can put a "terrible'' pre-season behind them as they begin their quest for a top-10 place.

Bruce has seen injuries and the World Cup disrupt his plans while the Black Cats have been one of the busier clubs in the transfer market, with eight players in and seven out.

He said: "There's always a feelgood factor at the start of the season. It's been a difficult pre-season with the World Cup, with injuries and transfers and all the rest of it.

"But there's nothing quite like the first game of the season and, even though we've had a terrible July and August, they'll be hot and we'll look forward to the challenge again.''Watch Sunderland vs. Birmingham Live Stream Soccer August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish is hopeful goalkeeper Ben Foster will have recovered from the back spasm suffered on England duty to make his debut.

City's other major summer signing, Serbia striker Nikola Zigic, is also included in the squad.

Defender Stuart Parnaby has been declared fit after sustaining a hamstring injury 10 days ago meaning veteran striker Kevin Phillips is the only major absentee with the torn thigh muscle which will sideline him for four to six weeks.

McLeish knows the importance of Blues making a positive start to the campaign.

He said: "It is a tough away game, a tough start. We are at a loss as to why six of the last seven times in the Premier League, we've had our first fixture away from home.

"I can't understand that. If that is all about the luck of the computer, then we must be one unlucky team.

"But saying that, if we can get off to a flying start away from home, that will be fantastic for confidence.

"We've got to go up there and look to perform the way we did in the second half of the last game against Sunderland.'''

Aston Villa midfielder James Milner has been named in caretaker-manager Kevin MacDonald's squad to play West Ham despite his impending move to Manchester City.Watch Aston Villa vs. West Ham United Live Stream Soccer August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

MacDonald believes Milner has the "mental strength'' to deal with any possible hostile reaction from his own fans.

MacDonald is also confident Milner's fitness levels will not be an issue even though he has played only 23 minutes - for England against Hungary on Wednesday - since the World Cup.
Former Liverpool midfielder MacDonald said: "I didn't have to think hard about putting James in the squad.

"It was a pretty straightforward decision for me. You need to get your best players on the pitch. James is one of our best players.Watch Aston Villa vs. West Ham United Live Stream Soccer August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

"James would also have the mental strength to deal with it if the crowd reaction is hostile. He is a tough lad.

"I would expect him not to let it affect him and he is very much a team player.''

MacDonald is hoping the Villa fans will react positively to the former Newcastle player.

He said: "I hope the fans don't get on his back.

"I hope they get behind him and say 'whatever happens, he is playing for us today' and look what he has done for us over the previous couple of years.''

MacDonald is set to be without defensive duo Carlos Cuellar and James Collins through injury.

Another player player with little chance - or should that be fat chance - of playing is West Ham striker Benni McCarthy.

The South African was left out his nation's World Cup squad due to his lack of fitness and has been put on a strict weight-loss regime in a bid to shed some extra pounds.

"Benni has a problem. He needs to lose some weight to be fit - he's a very good player when fit so we are trying our best,'' said Grant.

"I've only been here one month. He's a nice guy, he's doing everything we tell him to do but I cannot follow the players around 24 hours a day - maybe I will in the future.

"But I don't know what any player is doing in their private life and I can't put my finger on it. I know it started a year ago, and it's a pity because he's very skilful and a very good player.

"Any player that belongs to the squad we always try to get the best out of but it is not all one way, the player also needs to do his job.''

New signing Thomas Hitzlsperger is likely to miss out on the trip to his former club after suffering a thigh injury playing for Germany in midweek.

Watch Bolton Wanderers vs. Fulham Live Stream August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

Bolton boss Owen Coyle expects Fulham and Mark Hughes to be a winning combination this season.

It has been a difficult summer for the Cottagers following manager Roy Hodgson's defection to Liverpool and the search for his successor which only ended with the appointment of Hughes at the end of July.Watch Bolton Wanderers vs. Fulham Live Stream August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

Going into Fulham's opening Barclays Premier League game against Bolton on Saturday, Hughes has no new signings to his name and only around a fortnight of preparation with the players under his belt, but Coyle has predicted a positive campaign for the former Manchester City boss and his new club.
"You have a terrific manager first and foremost in the shape of Mark Hughes,'' Coyle said.

"There is no doubt that he will mould that team the way he wants, but he will also recognise that he has inherited some very good players from Roy.

"So when you put the combination together, Fulham will show everyone this season again that they are a quality side.''Watch Bolton Wanderers vs. Fulham Live Stream August 14 Barclays Premier League 2010

Hughes has a tough act to follow after Hodgson led the Londoners to unprecedented success last term by taking them to the Europa League final.

Coyle defied the odds at his previous club Burnley as the Clarets reached the Carling Cup semi-finals and promotion to the Premier League in 2008-09, and the Scot feels Fulham's exploits in Europe have demonstrated what smaller clubs can achieve if all the right factors come together.

"What it shows you is that if you have the belief and a group of players who are prepared to work - and sometimes the bounce of the ball goes your way - then it can be achievable,'' Coyle said.

"I've been fortunate enough to be involved in some dressing rooms like that myself - we did it at Burnley where we played 61 games that season with something like 16 players because we were embargoed and couldn't sign a player from January onwards.

"Fulham had a terrific season (in 2009-10) and I think all clubs in that area would look at Fulham and think 'they are a similar-sized club to ourselves - that is achievable'.

"It is, but you need the belief and the quality to back it up.''

Zat Knight is in line to face his old club after recovering from a hip problem.

Knight sat out last week's friendly against Osasuna but is available to play against his former employers.

New signing Martin Petrov has impressed in pre-season and is set to make his debut.

Meanwhile, Hughes has set his sights on the ambitious signing of Manchester City's want-away striker Craig Bellamy.

Hughes is determined to add more depth to his squad as he attempts to match the lofty ambitions at Craven Cottage following his appointment as Hodgson's successor this summer.

Hughes had previously said that he thought Bellamy would be out of his price range but he now seems keen on landing the former Liverpool man.

When asked if he would be interested in signing the striker, Hughes responded: "Yes. He was one of the top players in the Premier League and if he comes on the market, and if we're in the position where we can conclude a deal for Craig Bellamy, then yes we would be very interested.

"At the end of the day the way the situation seems to be forming for Craig that Manchester City won't use him at Premier League level, so from Craig's point of view it is very important that he makes the right decision for his career because a wrong decision at this point in time could hurt him, so I wish him well in what decision he takes.''

Hughes has so far been unable to land any of his transfer targets although he hopes to conclude a deal for AZ Alkmaar striker Moussa Dembele.

Dembele's transfer, which is thought to be in the region of £5million, would be a welcome after Andy Johnson's knee injury meant that Fulham had to rely on makeshift striker Zoltan Gera to partner Bobby Zamora up front last season.

Hughes was at the Premier League on Thursday trying to secure a work permit for the Belgium striker, who had also attracted the interest of Birmingham.

"We have made some progress with Moussa,'' said Hughes. "We hope that he will be in London by the close of play to do a medical, although it hasn't been fully signed off by his club yet.''

One man who will not be travelling to the Reebok Stadium is defender Philippe Senderos. The Swiss defender, who arrived on a free transfer this summer, has been ruled out for upto eight months after picking up an Achilles injury in training this week.

Just three points and one league position separated these two teams at the end of the 2009-10 campaign, but they were worlds apart in terms of what they achieved.Watch Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City Live Stream August 14 Premier League 2010

Tottenham's 1-0 win at Manchester City in the final week of the season secured an opportunity to claim their place among Europe's elite for the first time in five decades. But since then, it is City who have done the buying while Tottenham will have no new faces in their ranks for the opening match of the 2010-11 season.
While much of Spurs' team will pick itself after such a strong second half of last season, City boss Roberto Mancini has decisions to make - perhaps most notably in the goalkeeping department. Joe Hart was expected to start the season in goal but Shay Given has returned from his shoulder injury sooner than expected. Both started for their respective countries on Wednesday evening.Watch Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City Live Stream August 14 Premier League 2010

With Yaya Toure, Jerome Boateng, David Silva and Aleksandar Kolarov already signed to boost the ranks the likes of Craig Bellamy have found themselves surplus to requirements. Mario Balotelli looks to be on his way but this game will come too soon for the Italian striker.

City may have strengthened their squad with quality signings over the summer, but whether they will be a team and not just a group of individuals on the opening day is a different matter entirely.

Tottenham can point to a cohesive team unit which is used to winning. The pace and delivery of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon on the wings will prove a test for debutants Boateng and Kolarov, who are likely to fill the full-back positions for the visitors.

Tottenham player to watch: Jermain Defoe. Spurs' top scorer from last season has been a doubt for this game after missing the club's final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina, as well as England's game against Hungary, though the signs now point ot him playing a part. Defoe, who scored 18 Premier League goals in 31 starts last term, only netted four of those goals after the turn of the year but Spurs will hope he starts this season back on top form.

Man City player to watch: David Silva. The Spain international failed to shine at the World Cup finals, starting only the opening defeat to Swizterland before being restricted to cameo appearances. That said, Silva - who scored for Spain in their midweek draw win Mexico - remains a quality wide player who was previously courted by city rivals United. The former Valencia wide man will not be too fatigued after his lack of action in South Africa.

Key battle: Gareth Bale v Jerome Boateng. Germany international Boateng played most of the World Cup at left-back for his country, but he is expected to play on the other side of the defence at City. If Bale continues in the same rejuvenated form as he did in the second half of last season, with a new-found home on the left-wing, then Boateng could face a baptism of fire in the Premier League.

Trivia: Spurs had 19 different goalscorers last season, which is a Premier League record. Man City were the only team unbeaten after scoring first last season.

Stats: Spurs have beaten Manchester City in 11 out of their last 12 meetings. Man City have lost to Tottenham more times than any other club in Premier League history (19).

Odds: Tottenham (2.40), Man City (3.00) and the draw (3.30) are available with Bet 365. Gareth Bale to score the first goal of the Premier League season is priced at 15.00.

Prediction: Spurs will probably have enough to get off to a winning start on home turf, but the chances are that City may prove stronger over the course of the season.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez comes up against Barclays Premier League newcomers Blackpool for the first time since they opened his eyes to the task he faced restructuring the Latics.Watch Wigan Athletic vs. Blackpool Live Stream August 14 Premier League 2010

Martinez sent a largely reserve team to Bloomfield Road in August last year for a Carling Cup second-round tie and saw them humiliated 4-1 by the then Championship club.
The Spaniard was less than a month into his debut season as a top-flight manager after taking over from Steve Bruce but that result showed him what changes he needed to make to his squad to make them more competitive.

Fast-forward almost 12 months and Ian Holloway brings the Seasiders to the DW Stadium as a genuine Premier League team.Watch Wigan Athletic vs. Blackpool Live Stream August 14 Premier League 2010
Despite them being relegation favourites Martinez does not intend to take the visitors lightly, having slipped up once already.

"We achieved our aims last season because of the certain moments we had to suffer and in the Carling Cup certain players showed they couldn't carry on playing for Wigan,'' said the Latics boss.

"Those lessons are painful but they give you a lot and it is how you react to that and produce performances like we did further down the line.

"You don't like to get 'favours' in that manner because they are very painful but I was pleased with the lessons we learned that night and how that pushed us to be the team we were at the end of the season.

"It is a clear message of what Blackpool are capable of doing, they are very attacking and very brave.

"I don't expect them to change at all in the way they have been playing so it should be an open encounter.''

Defender Gary Caldwell is the only absentee as he is still six weeks away from a return after undergoing two hip operations in the summer.

Meanwhile, Blackpool boss Holloway has been inspired by the playing style of teams managed by Martinez - and hopes to see his side demonstrate that at the DW Stadium.

Martinez has tried to introduce the sort of flowing football over the last year that yielded so much success for him while manager of Swansea.

It is an attacking philosophy which Holloway admires greatly, and something the Bristolian is aiming to use against his Spanish counterpart when their teams go head to head.

"I will be going there fully respectful of what Roberto does - the way he does it was an inspiration for me anyway when he was at Swansea,'' Holloway said.

"I've got the utmost admiration for him and probably I'm a little bit jealous of the way he was brought up playing his way. He was a much more graceful footballer than I was.

"But when we go there tomorrow I can assure you that I'm going to make it as tough for them as I can and I'm going to try to attack them, because that is what I believe in.''

New signings Craig Cathcart and Marlon Harewood could be set for their Blackpool debuts.

Cathcart and Harewood were among a host of players to arrive at Bloomfield Road this week, with fellow new recruits Ludovic Sylvestre and Elliot Grandin also in contention to make their bow for the club should international clearance arrive in time.

Keith Southern misses out after picking up a knee injury in pre-season, as does Louis Almond with a shoulder problem and Billy Clarke, who is expected to be sidelined for most of the campaign having sustained cruciate ligament damage in his knee.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce has paid tribute to Everton counterpart David Moyes and his club for the stability they have created in a cut-throat managerial world.Watch Blackburn Rovers vs. Everton Live Stream August 14 Premier League 2010

In the last week Martin O'Neill has resigned at Aston Villa and Steve Coppell has quit Bristol City, for differing reasons, but Moyes is one of the longest-serving managers at the same club.
The Scot, in his eighth year with the Toffees and who was linked with the Villa vacancy, will arrive at Ewood Park for their Barclays Premier League opener with a ringing endorsement from Allardyce.

"It is a rarity now and Everton are extremely fortunate to have kept David where he is because of the work he has done and how hard he has worked to turn the club around from what was a difficult position when he took over,'' said Allardyce.

"David and the club fit very nicely and they are reaping the benefits of stability and the backing of a manager and good working relationships.Watch Blackburn Rovers vs. Everton Live Stream August 14 Premier League 2010

"It is something that lots more clubs in the Premier League, and certainly the Football League, should take notice of because without that stability you are not going to bring any sort of success to a club.

"It tells you about the enormous pressure of being a manager. We make the decisions we make because people don't see it in the same light we see it.

"In Steve's case it is the second time it has occurred where he is not comfortable in the surroundings - it happened at Manchester City a few years ago.

"Rather than it lingering on and damaging the club or him they have decided to part company.

"Martin has decided it is not longer viable for him to carry on at Aston Villa.''

Allardyce's side lost twice to Everton last season, including a thrilling 3-2 defeat at Ewood Park, but he believes his squad is stronger this season.

One of the reasons is the acquisition of Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf on loan.

"Anything we get against Everton this year will be a bonus because we got nothing from them last season,'' added Allardyce, who confirmed Ryan Nelsen will continue as club captain while fellow centre-back Christopher Samba will skipper Rovers on the pitch.

Meanwhile, Moyes says he had "realistic fears'' Mikel Arteta would leave Everton in the summer.

Instead the Spanish playmaker - linked with Arsenal and Manchester City - followed Tim Cahill by pledging his long-term future to the club.

Both players have been influential figures at Goodison Park, where money remains tight.

Moyes said: "Mikel is so important to us. He proved that when he came back last year from injury.

"I did not want to lose him and had no intention of selling him. But I had realistic fears he might go elsewhere, although not back to Spain.

"We try to do our best for the players and the chairman (Bill Kenwright) did well to convince him to stay with Everton.''

Arteta is set to face Blackburn as is midfielder Cahill, who sat out Australia's match against Slovenia in midweek with a slight knee problem.

Victor Anichebe is the only definite absentee and Moyes was in optimistic mood ahead of the new campaign.

Former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford could be on the bench after scoring three goals in pre-season with Louis Saha favourite to be employed as a lone striker.

Moyes is pleased with the progress of Beckford, who has climbed up the ladder from non-league Wealdstone.

"He has terrific movement in and around the box. He offers us something different,'' said the Everton boss.

"He is a hungry player. He has come from non-league to Leeds. You hope he retains that hunger and remembers where he was not too long ago and how far he has come.

"I hope he shows that in his performances. What he wants to do is score goals and that's what he does. What we have seen so far in training, he is very good at it.''
